Coffee Tokens in Costa Rica

The exhibit shows the history of the “Coffee Tokens”, a type of private coin that circulated in Costa Rica from 1840 on, to pay coffee gatherers. These tokens teach us about different labor, political, and economic aspects, as evidence of a time period when coffee was considered our “golden bean”.
